Day 1: Arrival in Lima
Greetings and welcome to Lima! You will meet your amazing Group Leader at the airport who will then accompany you to your accommodations to settle in. After meeting your group for an orientation and safety overview, you will all embark on a fun walk to explore the beautiful Miraflores. This sounds like an incredible way to start your trip!
Day 2: Historical Lima and LUM
Today, we are up for a full day of exciting activities in Lima. In the morning, we will have an interactive Spanish lesson where we will master history-related terms. Next, we will head to Lima’s historical center where we will uncover its captivating past while talking to history experts during our museum visits. After lunch, we will visit Lugar de la Memoria to learn about Peru’s recent history and reflect on its collective memory.
If we have some energy left, we can also visit Lima’s Magic Water Circuit after dinner, which is a stunning show of music, water, and laser lights. It’s an optional plan, but it’s definitely worth it!
Day 3: Lima Market Challenge
Today begins with an engaging Spanish class in the morning, setting the tone for a day steeped in language and cultural immersion. After honing your Spanish skills, the adventure continues with a visit to the bustling Mercado #1. This vibrant marketplace serves as the perfect backdrop for a Spanish market challenge, where you’ll interact with local vendors and residents, practicing your Spanish in an authentic setting.
As evening approaches, the day’s experiences culminate in a delightful cooking class. This evening activity not only allows you to unwind but also offers a hands-on experience in preparing traditional Peruvian dishes. It’s an excellent opportunity to deepen your appreciation of Peru’s rich culinary traditions while enjoying the fruits of your labor in a communal and festive atmosphere.
Day 4: Lima Reality Tour
Today’s morning will be dedicated to practicing conversational skills in a language lesson that revolves around daily life. After lunch, we will embark on an exciting adventure to visit some of MEDLIFE’s partner communities. This will be a unique opportunity to learn about poverty and global health while having fun practicing Spanish with community members.
Day 5, 6 & 7: Service Days
Every day begins with an immersive Spanish lesson designed to not only enhance your language skills but also prepare you for meaningful interactions throughout the day. Following the lesson, you’ll visit a MEDLIFE partner community, where you’ll gain firsthand insight into the local challenges and use your Spanish to connect authentically with the community members.
The afternoon is dedicated to a service project, where you can apply your Spanish in a practical setting. Past projects have varied, including the construction of staircases or green spaces, offering a tangible contribution to the community’s well-being.
In addition to the service work, you’ll have the chance to participate in a variety of cultural activities. These may include community roundtables to deepen your knowledge of the social determinants of health. These activities not only enrich your cultural understanding but also provide further opportunities for language practice.
Each evening offers a reflection close to the day. You’ll gather with your group to discuss the day’s events, drawing connections between your hands-on experiences and broader global issues.
Day 8: Huacachina & Ballestas Islands
In the morning, prepare for an exhilarating journey to the Ballestas Islands, often referred to as the ‘Galapagos of Peru’. This marine adventure begins with a boat tour, where you’ll witness an astonishing array of wildlife, including sea lions, penguins, and a multitude of seabirds. The natural beauty and biodiversity of the Ballestas are unparalleled, making this a must-see for nature enthusiasts.
After exploring the islands, your adventure continues as you travel to the captivating desert oasis of Huacachina. This unique location, surrounded by towering sand dunes, offers a stark contrast to the morning’s marine escapade. Huacachina serves as a perfect backdrop for a variety of desert activities like sandboarding or dune buggy rides, and it’s an ideal spot to relax and enjoy the surreal landscape. This combination of marine exploration and desert adventure makes for a day full of contrast, beauty, and excitement in some of Peru’s most iconic locations.
Day 9: Departure
Enjoy some final free time to explore or relax. Conclude your adventure with a reflection session, gathering insights and memories, before transferring to the airport for your return flight home.
