Day 1: Arrival to Quito
Arrive at Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO) where an Engaged Education representative will assist with check-in and answer your questions. Join our Welcome Meeting to review the itinerary, discuss safety, and meet the Engaged Education team. Get ready for an amazing week ahead!
Day 2: Quito City Tour
Embark on a city tour to discover the highlights of Quito, like the magnificent Compañía de Jesus church. Later, explore the “Mitad del Mundo” equator line, where you can take photos, visit museums, experience science, and straddle two hemispheres at once! An exciting day awaits!
Day 3: Cotopaxi
Starting early from Quito, we’ll head south on the Panamerican Highway to Cotopaxi National Park—36,000 acres of stunning Andean landscape. Our guide will lead us to Limpiopungo Lagoon for birdwatching and, with luck, sightings of wild horses. On clear days, we’ll see the impressive Cotopaxi Volcano. We’ll also visit the Interpretation Center to learn about past eruptions and local wildlife. After the tour, we’ll enjoy lunch before heading back to Quito. Get ready to explore Ecuador’s natural wonders! Today’s theme is Ecology of the Andes.
Day 4: Transfer to Tena
After breakfast, we’ll travel by bus from the hostel to Tena, watching the scenery shift from mountains to jungle on this 5-hour journey. Upon arrival, we’ll enjoy lunch and relax at the hostel—feel free to take a dip in the pool! In the evening, we’ll explore the Malecón Escénico, a scenic riverside spot perfect for soaking in the local vibe. Get ready for an exciting day of exploration and relaxation in Tena! Today’s theme is Geography of Ecuador.
Day 5: Reality Tour
Start your Reality Tour by visiting the Community of Ahuano, where you’ll meet a local family and learn about traditional medicine and education with a visit to a nearby school. After lunch, continue to Shiripuno to explore Tena’s vibrant culture—visit a women’s co-op, enjoy a traditional dance, and discover local customs and attire. End the day unwinding at the scenic Misahualli river beach, taking in the natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere.
Day 6: Visit to Baños and transfer to Quito
Today we will have an exciting journey to Baños, a vibrant city at the base of Tungurahua Volcano where the Andes meet the Amazon. Known for its hot springs and stunning views, Baños offers adventure and rich traditions. After a scenic bus ride from Tena, hop on a colorful Chiva for the Route of the Waterfalls. Marvel at Pailon del Diablo, where you can descend staircases and cross a suspension bridge for an up-close view. Don’t miss the Swing at the End of the World atop a mountain, offering breathtaking vistas. Finally, get your ride back to the capital city of Quito.
Day 7: Flight to Bartra Island (not included)
Today marks the beginning of your exciting Galapagos adventure. Your journey starts with a flight from Quito to Baltra Island, the gateway to this extraordinary archipelago.
Upon arrival, we’ll head straight to the highlands of Puerto Ayora to see giant tortoises roaming freely in their natural habitat. You’ll also explore the region’s unique geology, including lava tunnels and the twin craters known as “Los Gemelos.” Get ready to experience the incredible biodiversity and landscapes of the Galapagos. Today’s theme is Ecology of the Galapagos and Conservation.
Day 8: Navigable Tour to Neighboring Islands
Get ready for an unforgettable day in the Galapagos as we set off on a motor yacht excursion to explore nearby islands like North Seymour, South Plazas, Santa Fe, or Bartolomé. Cruise across the Pacific, spotting rays, sea lions, and other marine life along the way. This journey offers a front-row seat to the incredible biodiversity that makes the Galapagos so unique. Today’s theme is Marine Biology.
Day 9: Santa Cruz Island – Isabela Island
Get ready for an exciting day on Isabela Island! After a morning speedboat ride and hotel check-in, we’ll head to Tintoreras—small islets known for calm waters and rich marine life like reef sharks, sea lions, rays, penguins, and blue-footed boobies.
In the afternoon, bike along the Wetlands Trail, spotting marine iguanas and mangroves as you make your way to the historic “Wall of Tears,” built by prisoners during WWII.
Today’s theme is Marine conservation.
Day 10: Hiking Day – Isabela Island
Explore the geological marvels of Isabela Island—one of the youngest and most volcanic islands in the Galapagos. Hike up the massive Sierra Negra volcano, where morning mist adds to the adventure. Along the way, spot Galapagos Hawks, finches, and owls as you reach the rim of Volcán Chico, a surreal landscape of lava tubes and fumaroles.
Enjoy lunch under a shady jaboncillo tree, with views of Fernandina, Pinzon, and Santa Cruz Islands. After the 16 km (9.9 mile) trek, relax on the peaceful shores of Puerto Villamil.
Day 11: Departure
Take an early morning speedboat back to Santa Cruz and then transfer by land to Baltra for your onward journey or flight back home (flight Baltra Island to Quito not included). We extend our warm wishes for safe and joyous travels ahead!
